Federation Peak

I propose a summit bid to Federation Peak, a large scary mountain in SW Tassie around xmas 05. Who wants in?

Here’s some links:
John Chapman’s page
A trip account - looks like a bit of an epic bought on by inexperience. Check out the link called shear [sic] at the bottom.

The last section to the summit is fairly exposed, leave your fear of heights at home ;)

I was wondering when this page would appear…

Tickets to Hobart at that time are $121 1-way, Launceston is $91. Should we book?

There is of course the Western Arthurs Traverse, Frenchman’s Cap and Mt Anne? Federation Peak is undisputedly the premier bushwalking mountain climb in the country and this may be reason enough to save it for a while to increase the mystique.

  2. ylm says:

Do we presume that you would have written 100,000 words by then?

  3. ylm says:

I must protest. The previous message was not sent by me but by YLD.
However, I imagine that you might have to take a laptop with you and maybe some voice recognition software so that you can walk and talk and finish the 100000 words at the same time as conquering any one of the nominated peaks.
    Now that would be dominant.

  4. tom says:

i think that the written domination will be complete by that stage.

lock, there’s a whole world out there. i don’t think we’ll be spoiling our bushwalking careers. in-fact we might not make it so that may increase the mystique even more!

    lock, dry your eyes mate!

  5. timtim says:

Might not make it! What kind of second tier dominator are you? Before the days of domination a certain crew would have X-hiked up that little peak no problems. Have the years made you grow weary?

  6. tom says:

sorry, the force of subordination is strong in that one!

  7. lock says:

Too much domination going into fishy things rather than peak-bagging.

  8. timtim says:

by the way i like the fact that in the second sentence of John Chapman’s page is ‘dominates’. I Like It! bring on IMD

  9. tom says:

ok, i’m thinking the week after xmas, maybe have new year’s day on the summit???

  10. timtim says:

as much as i would love to be part of the domination at this time I might have to pass on being “out the back o’ bourke”, unless I can fly direct from there off the dirt strip. Virgin would do it for sure, I’d probably just have to put the olde thumb out and flag them down.

  11. tom says:

Maybe you should just deal with it and dominate anyway, skip xmas @ Belalie this year.

    We can’t go without you!

  12. timtim says:

I would in any normal circumstance but it is now 4 years since I have seen the dusty plains and, at risk of getting all romantic, I miss it.

  13. timtim says:

I’m not ruling it out though, I will probably just have to juggle a few things

  14. tom says:

    juggle away you clown!

  15. timtim says:

by the way sarah “random” smith will not be swinging by townsville after all. She and Shane drove there via bourke, realising that it was not as far as first thought if you drove the line of least resistance. They did manage to claim some native wildlife in the front fender just outside Engonia right near Belalie.

  16. timtim says:

Also Lach and I have discussed the idea of Wilson’s Prom if Tassie proves to be a challenge (I’m not liking my chances) and then perhaps a bit of a cruise along the great ocean road or back east to some of the more remote national parks there or the southern slopes of the ranges, Buffalo even. we shall see..

  17. tom says:

that would save an airfare too.

  18. tom says:

when would you be freed up?

  19. timtim says:

I guess some time around new year. Got car, will travel! a road trip could be pretty good, when you back north in the new year? Mate Wilson’s Prom, from the little I have seen, seems amazing!

  20. ylm says:

Now back in the day when I did Wilsons Prom it was very sweet.

  21. YLD says:

    How dominant is THAT!

  22. tom says:

Yes, quite good, but there’s not really enough details to make a proper judgement.

  23. timtim says:

about 19th Feb to 3rd March Heather and I are going to go down to Tassie if anyone is keen, FP is in mind, tickets are $70 each way ex sydney at the moment. Anyone keen to come along?

  24. tom says:

if you’re def. going to do FP then i’m in.

  25. timtim says:

yes mate that is the plan

  26. tom says:

but i don’t have enough cash, so i’m going to have to pull out :( :( :(

  27. timtim says:

well plans have changed anyway, it’s not going anywhere. Can’t you get a research grant to find some kind of fish at the top with Lach and I as your research assistants?

  28. timtim says:

I’ll get you next time gadget, next time……….

  29. lock says:

I don’t see my long-winded and thought-provoking comment up yet Tomo. You must be too busy printing Dominators singlets…

In other news, I rode Manly Dam with a mate on Sunday and halfway around my second lap I busted my seatpost (because I’m hard as nails), so I had to ride all the way back without a seat (doubly hard). I felt like Paul Rowney in the ‘96 Olympics in which he did the same but rode about another 40km without a seat and still came 15th. Dominant.

  30. timtim says:

I have ridden/raced beside Paul Rowney, (for a very short period of time) he is dominant. He still stomps all over the little boys in their sponsor’s kit out there.

  31. lock says:

My extra long comment still hasn’t turned up yet? It’s been a month or so. What’s going on Tomo? Have you had something better to do recently?

  32. tom says:

it dissapeared. i seem to have no control over the stupid comment software

  33. timtim says:

hey tom are YLM/YLD still in the ville? I would like to hit them up for the dehydrator when they get back

  34. tom says:

YLM will be home on Sunday night.

  35. tom says:

YLM says go around and ask duncan to get it out of the shed for you, it’s in a box on one of the shelves.

  36. timtim says:

timtim says thanks to YLM but who knows what duncy poos is up to in the house all on his own. I shall tread lightly

  37. timtim says:

or perhaps i should tread heavily to be sure I disturb the wildlife
