testate amoeba

I’ve been processing some of the invertebrate samples for my PhD and have been coming across these weird little, spiny donut shaped things.

Turns out that they’re “testate amoeba”. That means they’re single celled boogers that make a ‘test’ (little house) out of tiny grains of sand. They then cruise around and engulf their prey. Cool, hey?
