Dunk-man does NQ

Duncan (my bro) arrives tommorrow from cold-old Sydney. He should be in fine form, having finished his exams this afternoon! I think there’ll be some beers at the Brewery, a trip up Castle Hill, a spin around Reef HQ, some lazing around on Magnetic Island, a bit of a road trip up to Cape Trib, and even a spot of fishing. Should be sweet! It will also be Duncan’s first visit to Townsville (land of the Bogans)…

Speaking of bogans. I’ve decided to embrace bogan-hood while I’m living in the north. I mean, when we’re living in cosmopolitan Vancouver or Tokyo I won’t be able to pull out such pearls as “no drama, cane farmer” or “how-ya-goin’?” without turning heads.

I’m also discovering, through my efforts to explore the interesting and complex class structure of Townsville, that there’s a big difference between bogans and rednecks. The latter rejoice in knowing fuck-all about pretty much everything except rugby league (and possibly illegal fishing techniques), whilst the former tend to exhibit general knowledge extending well beyond rugby league (many are quite smart) and generally lack the racist bigotry.

The bogan is esentially an ‘easy-going’ person with a really bad hair-cut. An interesting dichotomy, however, is that whilst appearing to not care about much (the environment for example), they do tend to care a lot about certain things. For example, putting in a big effort, working hard and sticking by your mates.

In addition, bogans (despite/or perhaps because of their rough and aggressive exterior) tend to be convinced by aggressive and in-your-face arguing techniques and seem to be swayed by the opinion of others in the group. It’ll be interesting to what Dunk thinks.

The education continues…
