Life as it is - or isn’t

For the lovers of student replies, I just received this email from another a fish-head here at JCU:

hello Tom,

Here are a few words - absolutely word for word and punctuation included - of wisdom from recent zl1001 theory papers to mull over…..

“Cilia and flagella are the two most common forms of locomotion in the Kingdom Protista. Cilia is used and can be explained by many flagellum being used in a rhythmic beating pattern like the Mexican wave, whereas. The flagella is a few flagellum beating spontaneously in a fast and unpredictable rhythmic beating pattern. Although the occurrence of cilia and flagella in the Animal Kingdom is low. As there are many methods of locomotion used through out animals.”

“A tube foot moves by muscular waves as wave-like motions move through the foot.”

“The function of a feather is to keep a bird insulated from surrounding weather. They can also be a raincoat in the fact that they have a waterproof coat on their feathers. They were also designed in most cases for flight. Something that will go over the top to give them speed but something that is lite as easy to be lifted up by the air. Also for balance in flight.”

“Flagella are also the reason flame cells in the excretory system of nematodes are so called and may be others but I can’t think of any now.”

The ovum is large and stationary. Therefore if the tiny sperm were not flagellated and simply floated around fertility rates would be quite low.

This person really knew what they were on about in a deep philosophical way…….

“The difference between proximate and ultimate levels of causation is that they are important to the levels important to the field of behavioural ecology because they have significance to the behaviour of all creatures in the Animal Kingdom. ”

and perhaps my favourite from this particular cohort…..

“They are many food capture methods that have evolved, however the Class Polychaeta has decided to go towards the use of cirri, flagella, cilia in order to capture food”

I just wish that I could be so…….decisive……so in charge of my destiny……..
