Kiki and Zoe go to Laura
On the weekend Kiki and I went to the Laura Dance Festival which is IN Laura, a town west of Cape York, not a festival ABOUT some chick called Laura.
Laura is about 8 hours drive north and west from Townsville, which is a bit of a hike. But since we had already planned to go up to Cairns for a couple of days, because Kiki needed to get a new visa, and we would already be half waythere, we made a weekend of it.
the drive is on dirt roads for quite a bit, and it’s red red dust. we developed a system of warning codes: “CAR!” and procedures: rapid window winding whenever a vehicle passed us to avoid choking, but still ended up with red dust in every conceivable area of the body… which stayed there ’till sunday afternoon and a chance to soak in the sea and scrub with sand on the Northern Beaches on the way back.
the festival itself was awesome, especially the Briscoe Sisters, the Yabbas, Black Image and the Cairns TAFE Dancers, as well as the kids who danced representing their communities, plus for fun (including the hilarous boys who were most efficiently and skillfully taking the piss out of some ferals dancing) and of course the ones who learnt acrobat skills in an afternoon workshop and performed with the Blackrobats that night. I’m sure you will be hearing more about these guys, especially when CDs arrive!
anyway, sorry, there are few photos, as we were asked not to take any of the performers for intellectual copywright reasons, which is a totally valid point. go to the link above to check out pics. But keep an eye out for the ones of the camping, landscape and our incredibly dirty feet!

Psst… where are the pics, Zo?
Seeing as you’ve gone to the trouble of posting on tom.com I decided to comment.
I know what it’s like to have the piss taken out of you for your dancing skills… no, people, not up on a podium in the nightclub formerly known as Berry Street but during a corroboree in Patjarr, 750km NW of Uluru, the Aboriginal community I stayed in while building their community centre. They were dominating the emu dance while we watched but when we were asked to get up and join in, even after a lesson, we looked like a bunch of epileptic chickens, not graceful emus. Needless to say we got laughed at by the whole community (even more so by the 5 year olds) and hence I have retired from emu dancing forever.

Ha ha ha ha… I was pissing myself the whole way through those pics. Not because of the dance festival, not because of your red feet but because Kiki’s Magna has lost it’s fabric ceiling exactly like my mum’s old one did. I can just smell that perishing foam smell as the little bits of sticky orange crap rain down on you throughout a long trip. Too funny.
