might as well, although i don’t think you can do the whole lot without turning it into a full on climbing mission because of the steep rock sections of the south east ridge. maybe we should go up and see what we can dominate once we’re up there. although a short (10m 9mm) rope might be good for pack hauling. what do you think?
My book says: “Bowen is fat. P-H-A-T. Fat. Only the toughest of the tough hard men will be able to tame this mighty beast.” Or something like that.
The full traverse is 3-4 days worth with abseilling and climbing an integral part. The notes I have are also written North to South so I would have no idea what sort of grading the climbing would be going the other way.
sound good, i have 2 options, might bring them both as a back up/option but i have about 9/10m of 7mm prussik cord and those 25m red ropes that we took canyoning. i would be keen on catching a tasty fish or croc for a feast one night, which could be a challenge from the top of bowen
there is nothing too unappealing sounding about that mission lach but i assume that that involves climing to the point of needing some protection, what does it say about the grade of climbing? and what does it say about anchors for abseiling, trees, bushes, blind faith?
I’ll have to read the notes in more detail and report back, but I would assume there would be no bolts anywhere along the route. It’s just you trad climbing, Timtim, carrying a 20kg pack.
ok, i think we should do the beach mission. then go up mt bowen following warrawilla creek and descend down the pineapple spur or whatever it’s called. that way we also get to chill on the beach and eat crocs. hey, i was thinking we should mission out to other bays and stuff around the rocks…. rather than staying to the normal spots. i don’t think that one ranger is going to be an issue here.
oh, and we only have permit for two days on the mountains so….
Tomo, what time does the ferry get us back to the car on Friday and then how long does it take to drive back to Townsville? Are there options or do we have to make the one boat?
sounds good to me, i am pretty easy but if i need to bring gear i will want to have an idea about what to take. by the way lach we thinking sat or sun at killingsworth/Lisdale/Ourimbah/Penrose/Yarramundi this weekend?
It leaves Ramsey Bay at 11:15am, heads to the resort until 4 and then gets back to Cardwell on the coast at 5pm. We will be driving Kiki’s car back from there to Townsville. There is no other option.
A complex car drop-off and tinny transfer is being organised for the sothern end.
I’m free either day, Timtim. What suits you and where? I’ve never ridden Yarramundi and it’s not too far away - that could be good. By the way - those Larsen TT’s are the business.
this weekend just gone saw the WSMTB club doing a working B so it should be fresh for riding sat. I can’t be sure because i haven’t checked but sun is normally the day all these clubs have their races, state rounds etc so sat would be good. Yarramundi is also PHAT! and a bit closer to town. other takers? Heather is away for the weekend, Kath? Gus, John?
No, that’s just me in perfect control, steering with subtle butt squeezes.
I crashed a couple of k’s back on a rocky downhill and was passed by 4 guys on dualies riding in a pack, sending me from 2nd to 6th so I decided to play silly buggers instead. Get me an IDXC Timtim!
The only direct flight from SYD to TSV on the 15th gets in at 10.00am, so I’ll probably get that (though this may change on the day depending on the number of available seats…).
I can easily make my own way from the airport to yours to save Zoe the trip and am happy just to mosey around the sunny village of Townsville during the day if Zoe’s working &/or busy, so there’s no need for her to worry about me. I’m just psyched to be going on a mini holiday!
Kath: my girlfriend Ves from NZ is also visiting, so of course we can come pick you up from the airport and entertain you, you sill girl!
Everyone: on the Saturday night Tom and I are throwing (in ya’lls esteemed honour of course, as well as for fun) a HUGE PARTY! the theme is “You Can’t Wear That In Townsville!” and it’s the first real house party we’ll have thrown, after nearly 3 years of saying we will throw one… so think of somehting cool to wear too - we can also go op-shopping Sat am if needed.
Zoe, just make sure you don’t tell your neighbours below about the party and give them a blast of music with the bass turned on full, just to repay them for keeping YLM and YLD awake during our last visit. (All in the cause of good neighbourly relationships. If they complain, tell them to call me

June 27th, 2005 at 2:08 pm
agreed, should i bring rope then?
June 27th, 2005 at 2:09 pm
we could bring a bit of gear, depending on what lach’s guide says and do the full traverse. Are we up for an Adventure X-hiking style?

Saturday it is. We’ll talk later in the week about details. What sort of grade is the track? Soft like Killingsworth?
Tomo, I’ll find out what time Kath gets in on Friday.
Back to work now…
