Priceless

Waders $230, guide $150, car hire $80, catching 10 silver salmon between 8 and 12lb in 5 hours… priceless.

fat fish

Fishing, as you might judge from the gallery entitled Alaska2 was fresh, and well worth the money. The guide, an 18 year old Alaskan, put me onto the spot on the whole of the Russian River (which is the river in AK). Jodi, you’ll be pleased to see the waders come in a nice daube-green/olive colour (def. not pistachio - lock). You may also have problems seeing the top of my head which is, of course, in stealth mode.

I’m now in Vancouver, having flown down from Anchorage this afternoon. It’s now 9:12pm (Canada’s west coast in an hour behind AK) and I’ve already settled into the Samesun downtown backpackers (which is pretty good), had a beer with fish and chips and gone for a short walk.

A little tired from today, which was basically a crazy-fast 2.5hr drive (on the right hand side of the road) back to Anchorage from the Kenai Peninsula, to make my 2pm flight south. So, hoping for some sleep tonight (can never be too sure at hostels) and to write up my talk for monday tomorrow (which is sat.). Might have to head to the uni campus for this… Speaking of work. I was seated in the row in front of the Prof. from UBC, who I’ve been emailing with over the last few weeks, so arranged to drop by his office on Monday too.

The inevitable has happened and I’m running out of $$$bling quickly. Alaska was ridiculously expensive. Everything was about twice the price and in US dollars too. Canada has bought some much needed fiscal relief, so I should be able to escape from here with some cash still in hand. I was hoping to get some steelhead fishing in, but it’s going to be too pricey methinks.

Other opportunities include Ryan Styles theatre-sports and Lyric Born and the Beatnuts playing on Sunday night 500m down the street from where I’m staying… *eek*

    dreams come true.
this is a long way from those first fly fishing efforts at lake crackenback.

indeed… with a little effort and expense of course ;)

as they say in cheesy movies:

    love what you do.

Fish look awesome, were you able to eat/smoke any in the end?

and Darling, you’re getting progressively more beard-y… did you take any facial hair reducing implements, or are you planning to scare the other hot-shots off the hawaiian barrels with your ngarly bush-man impersonation? hey, good strategy!

  5. tom says:

although like phildo’s dad said, “don’t trust guys with beards, they have something to hide”. Although he also said, “don’t dive under the waves, you might break your nose”. in reference to 2ft manly. ahhaa!!

They are some large fish, but what’s with their huuuuge noses? (fish can have noses, can’t they, Tomo?). They must feed them hormones like all the salmon we eat here or are they just inbred like the flanny-wearing Alaskans in that previous post’s picture?

Zo, lets hear some stories of Townsvillian domination in Tomo’s absence. Have you painted the Pathfinder pink yet?

  11. tom says:

    yes, they are quite fat.

i guess it’s the hormones related to spawning.

    a pink pathy - classic.
