I was wondering about that… Basically they are getting rid of the print copies of journals, to which the university has electronic access. I understand they need the stack space, but it just seems so wrong to be “recycling” all that effort.
The Library started a relegation project in 2005 to remove select materials from the library collections and in particular from the Douglas Library building.
Library staff have prepared a list of journal titles, available in both print and electronic formats, from the JCU Libraries in Townsville and Cairns. We are proposing to discard the print copies and to provide access through the electronic version.
There a case a few years ago of the University of Western Sydney (might have got that wrong) throwing thousands of books into an unofficial on-campus landfill under the cover of darkness, but they were uncovered and the university got some very dirty press as a result.
