Still here

I haven’t updated for while. It’s not because I’m not here, but because I’ve been too confused to do anything other than stare absently at my monitor, trying to work out how I fucked up so bad that I can’t replicate the result that I’ve just produced - don’t even get me started on what it means. I’m deep into my fifth chapter (the fish community analysis) and it’s looking pretty good, if perplexing. I have an inverse relationship between seasonal flow, habitat and invertebrate abundance and diversity, but a positive relationship between flow and fish catch per unit effort and biomass per unit effort. So, there appears to be some antecedent effect of flow going on, or a response by fish to a combination of factors beyond the analytical scope of my data set. In any case, it’s more confusing that trying to solve a rubix cube one-handed or while trackstanding (I can’t be bothered finding the videos but trust me, they exist).

I’ve also been staying off my fixed gear bike - the pacemaker - in order to let my leg heal. It’s not really working: in fact, it’s getting sorer. So, I think I may have to get back on, albeit in a lower gear. Plenty of people will be doing the same over the coming weeks as the Tour de France kicks into gear. I stayed up last night to watch stage 2, which was not quite as crazy as stage 1. Kessler, from T-Mobile, went out with about 5km to go, but was swamped by the peleton with only 100m left. Robbie McKewen won the sprin from world champion Tom Boonen in a pretty awesome display of power. I would love to be able to ride 230+km in a day, but I think my legs would fall off before I got out of Townsville.

Over at sexyloops.com they’re talking about scientific generalist approaches to the art, which I assume means that they’re taking a leaf out of my book of Bucket Science. Speaking of bucket science, this weekend I head to Paluma for the annual climate change talk fest. I’m going to give a talk entitled, “Hawaii, what’s in it for me?”. It was intended as a review of climate change in Hawaii, but may just become a slide-show of cool volcano pictures. They better have SBS up there though, or there may be a nightly mutiny to the public bar at Rollingstone.
