Back from the dead
Following my accident at Alligator Falls, Clwedd and I spoke about how cool it would be to see the photos of the helicopter rescue. Townsville wasn’t big enough to hide them.
I fell from behind the boulder in the upper right of the photo below. The paramedics said, “Mate, you should be dead”. Check out how my feet are different colours!
The water flows off to the right of the photo for about 4m, before plunging about 100m, in a vertical drop, to the base of the falls.
Note how the strap of the Teva sandal has been pushed right up my leg, and the handy DIY splinting system.

All this time I couldn’t really visualise it actually looked like, but the 2nd and 3rd pics show how far it was, how lucky you are and how unlucky you were about a metre away from being!

Um…. Who would think to take photos? Did they sell them to you as a momento, like when you ride the Demon at Wonderland?

Looks like a suitable place to land a helicopter - a nice large flat open area. It hurts just looking at it.

Yeah, they didn’t actually land - they hovered, lowered the crew, circled around and later returned to winch us to safety.
The prop-wash was pushing the water back up the falls.

WOW! It make me kinda wish I had some awesome action shots of my car vs. bike fight. Like I’ve said before as a rescuer/emt that was the first time I had ever ridden in an ambulance where I wasn’t the person doing the first-aid. I have a Dr.s appt this week so we should see how I am healing up? So far I feel pretty good I am riding again if ever so slowly and I am back in school full time!! Thanks Tom for sharing you life altering event with us. (PS it kinda makes me queasy too! Bad memories!)
