This week I’m attending a course on electrofishing, the use of electricity to stun and capture fish, in order to get certified and avoid frying myself in future. It’s about time I did such a course, because I’ve been electrofishing for the last 6 years. In that time I’ve only managed to electrocute myself once. The thing is, until now, we’ve really had no theoretical background to our methods - just trial and error. As Alan, the course instructor says, “trial and error will get you to the right answer eventually [maybe], but with the knowledge from this course we can get there faster”.

There’s an old saying that you can find old electricians and fast electricians, but you don’t find any old, fast electricians.

So all those years ago when I came electrofishing with you somewhere in the depths of the hawkesbury catchment, wearing nothing but a pair of rubber gloves and false confidence, you had no training?! Well I’ll be?!
