So close

I am getting very close to handing-in my PhD, hence the infrequency of posts here at tomandzoe.com. This morning I did an early riser and got through some of the edits on my thesis. It worked pretty well, with most of the figures now sorted. All I need to do now is:

- get edits back from one supervisor
- incorporate edits
- fix mistakes and clear up bad paragraphs
- write general discussion (~5 pages)
- write general introduction (ditto)
- amalgamate the chapters into one super-document
- add page numbers, table of contents, list of tables and list of figures
- format references
- proof read
- send to supervisors for final comments
- incorporate final comments
- print
- sign
- submit

I am hoping that I can send the final draft off on Sunday night, leaving my supers with the task of looking over it one final time while I’m attending a week long electrofishing course. Crazy times! In the meantime, you might like to peruse the archives or some bird, bike or fish related nonsense. Or maybe Zoe will put up a post…

Well done to get this far mate, superb effort.

It has been one hell of an SGP!!!

  2. YLD says:

Don’t forget to save and backup constantly.
I lost a whole Adjudication determination the other day and had to start again!
And, don’t leave your printed copy of your thesis on the roof of your car, in order to open the door, and drive off! I had a student do that once.
    Good luck buddy boy.

  3. Ves says:

    Exciting, Tom!

Yes, more posts from Zoe please…. Judging by your poll I’m not the only one who’s hoping (against hope - surely not?) for it!

  4. tom says:

Hi Ves, I’ve updated the poll to rank the desire for more Zoe posts!

  5. Kiki says:

    Yeah, more Zoe!!

Good on yo, Tom. I am so happy for you, then you can come and visite me in Europe and do some fly-fishing, here.

  6. tom says:

This is typical of the sort of comments Richard has been giving me:

Don’t hyphenate adverb and adjective. The purpose of a hyphen in these circumstances is to make it clear which word a modifier is modifying. In this case the adverb can only be modifying the adjective (derived – actually a gerundive!), not the noun (litter) so it’s unambiguous.

A gerundive! What? A verb is a doing word, right? ;)

Also, how cool would it be to tear off my academic gown at graduation, to reveal my Dominators singlet?

  7. lock says:

I think, at the very least, having it under you gown, close to your skin, could give you the inner strength to dominate a polite smile, a tipping of your floppy hat and a shake of the Chancelor’s hand with perfect decorum.

  8. tom says:

    Yeah, right…

  9. Retired Lady says:

A ‘gerundive’ is a scuba dive performed by a person over the age of 75 years.

  10. YLD says:

It seems English is a bit short on gerundives. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerundive

  11. ylm says:

    Keep going, baby.
Tables, refs, discussion, intro - wow.
    Monday looks a bit close.

  12. Rodders says:

Mate, I feel for you. I’ve had only about a week and a half of full on thesis writing and I’m already sick of it!

Keep us posted about the outcome and then we should celebrate with a beer or two *note the desperate need for distraction*

And yeah… What is Zoe doing? We want her posts… with gerundives and all that.
