Big Smoke
In March I’ll be starting a postdoc at the University of New South Wales. However, I’m not so sure about this whole Sydney thing.
When I lived in the big smoke before I loved it - but I’ve changed since then. Sure I still like going to the pub, seeing movies, eating good food past 6pm, going out with my friends etc…, but I also like to go fishing and bird watching, I like living near the beach, in a shack, that’s cheap. I like being within 15 minutes of traffic-free driving (or 30 mins cycling) from work.
This weekend I have to travel from Port Stephens to go and look at flats. It’s apparently an expensive and highly competitive market, with people doing ridiculous things like paying six months’ rent up front. Although how much is urban folklore and rumour isn’t clear.

Well things will only kind of change. You’ll still be 30 minutes ride from work, it’ll just take twice as long as that to drive =)

Try moving to London!! Makes Sydney congestion look like that of a country town!

I can really understand you Tom, big city life is a change to small village life, as in Townsville or port stephens!!
But think on all our complaints during Townsville time, where we couldn’t eat well or didn’t have some culture going on.
Now since I life back here again, its not that I do all those things as theatre, cinema, eating out and pub nights, anyway, but its still good to be here, its a change and its necessary to go back into nature in future- Alien in New York!!

I consider Garbutt the cultural centre of the Universe. Just look at all the fishing tackle/bike/smash repair shops there are there. Every retiree’s dream! Stuff London, Europe, or NY; Garbutt is where it’s at!

I was starting to get sad about going back to the big smoke next week… but thanks for reminding me there are worse places to be, such as Garbutt!
