Plover
Mum, Dad and I braved Sunday’s early morning light (an hour earlier, on account of daylight savings) to go birdwatching. I hadn’t been out to look at birds for some time, so it was good to dust off the Swarovski’s, nick a Leica scope from the Lab and go searching for the rare and beautiful among the greyhounds and toxic chemicals an Penryhn Spit on the shores of Botany Bay.
We quickly spotted the usual Bar-tailed Godwits, a couple of small plovers and this, a Pacific Golden Plover (probably). I say probably because, although I’ll be ticking it, there is a closely related bird called an American Golden Plover. Unfortunately, the two are so closely related that, even when holding them side-by-side, one would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Apparently this is only the second PGP for the year.
